Concerning levelling, I quite like the fact that you can improve your skills immediately when you earn experience points (even during combat), you don't have to wait until your character gains a level (which takes a loooong time in this game). I was confused at the beginning as well, it took me some time before I realized any character can learn basically any skill (except for magic) - you just need to find the right trainer.
